Send a photograph — a family portrait, a wedding picture, a house, a pet, a painting you own. We rebuild it in cut glass and stone so it survives on a wall for generations instead of fading in a frame.
Turning a photograph into mosaic is a translation, not a copy. The mosaicist decides where to keep detail and where to simplify, and that decision is what separates a good mosaic portrait from a pixelated one.
\nThe rule of thumb is one tessera per meaningful feature. For a face to read properly, the eye and the mouth need a handful of tesserae each — which means a portrait generally wants to be at least 60–80 cm tall, and comfortable at 1 m or more. Below that, we will suggest a tighter crop or a stronger silhouette.
\nImages that work beautifully: figures against a plain ground, animals, boats and buildings with clear edges, silhouettes at sunset, line art, and any photograph where the subject is unambiguous. Images that need work: busy crowds, heavy foliage texture, and anything where the emotional content sits in fine facial detail.
\nAn email with the photograph attached and three facts is enough for us to quote properly:

Roughly one tessera per feature. As a guide, a well-lit head-and-shoulders portrait reads clearly from about 80 cm tall; a full-length figure or group needs 1.5 m or more. We will tell you the minimum size for your specific image before you order.
It will read as the photograph — the likeness, the pose, the mood, the dominant colours. It will not be photographically sharp, and it is not meant to be. Expect a mosaic: visible tesserae, real surface relief, colour that shifts with the light.
Often yes. Send a scan at the highest resolution available. We can propose restoration and simplification as part of the proof so you can see exactly what will be lost.
